The IEI course caters to euphonium players and enthusiasts of ALL levels. We hope to bring together a great mix of aspiring young players, talented college students, motivated enthusiasts, and hard working amateurs!!
Participants will be immersed in recitals, chamber music, concerts, focus classes, and master classes. Participants will also have private instruction during the week and choose to perform in master classes as well as being offered solo and ensemble performance experiences at the Institute and in outreach concerts in the community. Participants can also recommend repertoire to be performed by IEI staff during the camp.

Artists and Staff for 2010
 

David Childs United Kingdom

King Edward III once said: "If you want to train a longbowman, start with his grandfather." This adage holds just as true for euphonium soloist David Childs who was born in 1981, to a family whose name had been synonymous with the euphonium for the last two generations. His grandfather, John was born in the Welsh Valleys and was a well-respected euphonium player who inspired his sons, Robert & Nicholas to play euphonium. Robert began teaching his son David from an early age and today David is widely regarded as one of the finest brass soloists of his generation.

He has toured extensively performing as a soloist throughout Europe, Australia, the Middle East, Japan, Hong Kong, and the United States. He is a keen advocate of new music and has premièred six concerti for euphonium, including a Royal Albert Hall radiobroadcast of Alun Hoddinott's, 'The Sunne Rising - The King Will Ride’. Back home in Wales David is Professor of Euphonium at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, and performs regularly as a principal soloist with the world famous Cory brass band. Adam Frey, United States

Adam Frey is the Artistic Director of the IEI for the past 6 years and travels the world sharing his music with audiences and students. He has commissioned more than 70 new works and arrangements as well as bringing the euphonium to orchestral audiences with his landmark recordings with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. He has 7 solo recordings with his newest being one of the only euphonium recordings on a major record label, Naxos. He teaches at Emory University and Georgia State University. Manfred Heidler, Germany

Manfred Heidler (born 1960) joined the Bundeswehr Military Music Service in 1979 after finishing his apprenticeship as a printer. He studied at the music colleges in Düsseldorf, Detmold and Trossingen (tenor horn/trombone, instrument pedagogy and conducting). After serving as a senior non-commissioned officer in the 2nd Army Band of the Bundeswehr, he started his music officer training. From 1994 he studied musicology, psychology and educational science at the universities of Heidelberg and Düsseldorf and attained his doctorate at the Robert Schumann University in Düsseldorf in 2004.

In 2006, Captain (Army) Dr.. Manfred Heidler was head of the 2nd Air Force Band in Karlsruhe. Since September 2007, he has been working for the Military Music Section of the Armed Forces Office in Bonn, where he is responsible for special tasks.

He is also a known tenorhorn and euphonium soloist in Germany and abroad in the USA, Great Britain, Hungaria, Finland, Sweden, Switzerland, Austria and works as a teacher of his instruments. Special articles about the history of the tenor brass instruments are written by him and were published in national and international Bandjournals.


Roger Behrend, Us Navy Band (ret.)

Roger Behrend retired from the US Navy Band in 2009 after more than 30 years of military service. He served as the Principal Euphonium of the United States Navy Band. Prior to joining the Navy Band in 1984, Mr. Behrend was a member of the United States Coast Guard Band. He earned his Bachelor of Music Education degree from Michigan State University and a master's degree from George Mason University. He studied with Leonard Falcone. He has performed as a soloist throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. He currently teachers at George Mason University.

Patricio Cosentino, Argentina

Patricio Cosentino is one of the main artists of tuba in South America currently. He has an intense schedule as an educational soloist and working to help develop a new generation of professional musicians in South America. He has performed much chamber and orchestral music and currently works as tubist with the Symphony Orchestra National Argentina and as Tuba Professor at the Conservatory Superior of Music “Manuel de Falla” in Buenos Aires. In 2009, he received his diploma from the Hochschule, Germany in Weimar.

His international activities include concerts with the National Symphony Orchestra of Lima, Peru, Orchestra of camera of the Pontifical University Javeriana de Bogota, Colombia, Symphonic Band of the Pontifical University Javeriana de Bogota, Colombia, Symphonic Band of the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters of the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina, Symphony orchestra of Bahia Blanca, Argentina, Symphony orchestra of Salta, Argentina, Symphonic Band of the summer course of Brasilia, Brazil, Symphony orchestra of Campiñas, Brazil and with the Symphonic Band of Cordoba, Argentina.

 

Charae Kruger, Cellist

Charae Krueger received her training in cello studies at the New England Conservatory of Music where she studied with Laurence Lesser and Colin Carr and received a Bachelor of Music degree in cello performance. She also holds an Artist Diploma from the Longy School of Music in Cambridge, MA. Ms. Krueger received her chamber music training with Eugene Lehner of the Kolisch Quartet, as well as with Robert Mann and Samuel Rhodes of the Juilliard String Quartet. She has also coached with such artists as Menahem Pressler of the Beaux Arts Trio, Louis Krasner, Felix Galimir and Leon Kirchner. She has played in masterclasses with Aldo Parisot, Janos Starker and Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi at the Banff School for the Arts.

 

Dr. Tom Gibson returns for his 6th year as an IEI Faculty Member and is one of the most sought after brass performers and teachers in the country. He has performed solo recitals, concerts, master classes, and clinics around the world. He enjoys a triple threat career as a celebrated Trombonist, Conductor, and as a teacher/coach. His degrees are from University of Michigan (B.M.), University of Northern Colorado (M.M.), and The Catholic University of America (D.M.A.).

Prior to moving to Atlanta in 2000, Tom was a member of the U.S. Navy Band in Washington, DC, for 6 years. He currently teaches at Kennesaw State University and produces his WORLD FAMOUS POD CASTS that cover a huge variety of personalities and topics. Jamie Lipton holds a bachelor's degree in music education and euphonium performance from Northwestern University where she studied with Rex Martin, and a master's degree in euphonium performance from the University of North Texas. She currently studies with Dr. Brian Bowman at UNT and is pursuing a doctoral degree in euphonium performance with concentrations in trombone, tuba, and conducting. Jamie has won many of the major euphonium competitions, including the 2006 Leonard Falcone Competition, the 2006 International Tuba and Euphonium Conference (ITEC) Competition, and the 2005 Potomac Festival Competition.-

Jamie was recently invited to perform as a soloist and in ensembles at the 2008 and 2006 ITEC conferences. Jamie also appeared at the 2005 Texas Music Educators Association Conference and the 2006 Percussive Arts Society International Convention as a member of the UNT Wind Symphony, and can be heard on several of their recordings on the Klavier and GIA labels.

 

Bernard H. Flythe recently joined the faculty at the University of Georgia in 2010 as a tuba and euphonium instructor. He is also currently teaching for his third year at Kennesaw State University and was named an artist affiliate at Emory University in 2009.

Mr. Flythe has performed with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and the Nashville Symphony. During the 1992-1993 season, he served as the acting principal tubist with the North Carolina Symphony. As a chamber musician, Mr. Flythe has performed with the Detroit Chamber Winds, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Brass Quintet, and the North Carolina Symphony Brass Quintet.

Mr. Flythe received a bachelor of music degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He earned his master of music and his specialist in music degrees from the University of Michigan. Mr. Flythe’s principal tuba teachers include Fritz Kaenzig, Robert Leblanc, David Lewis, Wesley Jacobs, and Michael Sanders.

A native of New Orleans, Louisiana, Martin Cochran is currently Assistant Professor of Instrumental Music Education and Low Brass at the University of Montevallo. Martin comes to Montevallo from the University of West Georgia, were he served as Instructor of Tuba and Euphonium. Martin holds degrees in Music Education and Wind Conducting from Louisiana State University and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and a Doctor of Musical Arts in Performance from the University of Alabama. Martin has been successful in a variety of competitions, both as a soloist and chamber musician. He was the winner of the 2002 Leonard Falcone International Euphonium Competition and the 2002 International Tuba Euphonium Conference Solo Competition and Mock Service Band Audition. At ITEC 2002, he was also a member of the Alabama Tuba Quartet, who took first place in the quartet competition.

Martin has appeared as a soloist with several professional, university, and high school ensembles throughout the southeastern United States and the British Isles. He was a featured artist at the 2002 U.S. Army Band Tuba-Euphonium Conference and the 2003 Southeast Regional Tuba-Euphonium Conference. Martin is frequently in demand as a clinician/guest artist, having recently presented masterclasses at several universities and high schools throughout the southeast. He has also served as assistant conductor of the University of Alabama Wind Ensemble, and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Symphony Band and Youth Wind Ensemble Program. Martin is also the conductor of the Montevallo Community Band.

 

Pianist, Caryl Worthington Conger, continues her passion of musical collaboration, performing regularly with wind and brass artists in recitals and conferences throughout the U. S. and abroad including the annual U.S. Army Band Tuba-Euphonium Conferences and the recent ITEA conferences in Finland and Greensboro and Denver. Her special niche of interest has been her collaboration with tuba and euphonium artists including tubists, Daniel Perantoni, Patrick Sheridan, Oystein Baadsvik, Roger Bobo, and Harvey Phillips, and euphoniumists, Steve Mead, Adam Frey, Roger Behrend, and Brian Bowman.

 

Magdalena Shumanova was born in Pazardzhik, Bulgaria and started playing piano at the age of 4. She attended school at the Secondary Music School "Dobrin Petkov" in Plovdiv, Bulgaria and was awarded the Special Faculty Award for Academic and Performance Excellence as well as soloing with the City Philharmonic Orchestra of Plovdiv playing Saint-Saens' 2nd Concerto for Piano and Orchestra. While attending school there, she studied with Julia Girginova and Svetlana Kosseva and received her diploma in Piano performance and for secondary specialized education in music and art in 2002.

Concerts, Recitals and Outreach

One of the major aspects of the IEI will be the HUGE  variety of concerts that participants and staff will both perform and listen.
Recitals will be presented by the IEI Artists and Staff and Participants will take part in participant recitals and also the Wednesday and Saturday evening concerts.

Travel, Tuition, Housing and Meal Information

 

Travel

Travelers can utilize Atlanta Hartsfield International (ATL) for arrival by air. Shuttle service (20 minutes one-way) by IEI staff will be available to Emory. during the standard arrival and departure times listed below. Hosted at Emory University in Atlanta, GA, the IEI Festival will be utilizing the new Donna and Marvin Schwartz Center for Performing Arts. The IEI has access to rehearsal space for ensemble and individual repetition as well as performances during the course. All facilities, housing, meals, and recreation can be reached without automobile transportation.

ARRIVAL - Plan to arrive between 12 to 4 PM on Sunday, June 20. Flights should arrive between 12 PM and 3 PM if possible.
DEPARTURE - Plan to depart in the morning on Sunday, June 27. Flights should depart between 9 AM and 11 AM if possible.

Scholarship Opportunities and Payment Options
These are scholarship opportunities and ways to reduce your overall tuition costs. It will help to mail your application early.

  • Pre-Registration - Applications and Tuition Payments postmarked before March 1, 2010 will receive a $50 discount. NOTE: This will also help secure your desired master class and private lesson instructor.
  • Payment Plans - To assist with players desiring to spread tuition and housing payments over a longer time period, applicants can begin making monthly payments starting with Pre-Registration as early as December. Depending on Tuition options, scholarships, and housing selections, 5 payments of around $150 will cover Full Tuition, and Housing and Meals for the IEI Festival.

Housing and Meal Options

All Participants and Staff are encouraged to reside on campus at Emory University with options for single and double rooms (IEI can help you find a roommate). All linens and towels will be provided. Participants may also practice in their rooms. Emory food service offers an excellent all-you-can-eat buffet style meal plan with vegetarian options. Three meals will be provided each of the full days, Monday through Saturday, as well as dinner on the first night and breakfast on the check-out day. Please note that Full Week Participants that choose to stay Off-Campus are required be on the Lunch and Dinner Meal Plan.
Lunches will be catered sandwiches from a variety of local deli-style restaurants.

  • Single Room Housing for 7 Nights and 20 Meals - $480.00.

    IEI Participants will also have access to Woodruff Physical Education Center at no charge for both fitness and swimming duties.
 


Participant Duties

  • To maximize the experience for attendees, participants are asked to prepare at least one lyrical and one technical solo as well as any interesting chamber music scores and parts.
  • Participants will take part in both internal IEI recitals as well as have the possibility of performing on an outreach concert.
  • Participants will receive private lessons during the week.
    NOTE: Applicants can request three preferred teachers and will be filled based on receipt of the application and payment of tuition.
  • Participants will also be offered to perform in specific Focus and Master Classes.
    NOTE: Applicants can request three preferred teachers or topics listed in order of preference, but slots are limited and will be filled based on receipt of the application and payment of tuition.
  • Participants can also nominate specific works to be performed by IEI Staff during the week. There is no guarantee for programming, but the IEI staff would like the week to be educational and focused on the participants and their desires for learning and performing.

Applications are reviewed and accepted on a rolling basis based on a number of criteria:
space available, maturity of the player for their age (age 14 and up), potential growth, current playing level, biography, and ability to work well in small groups.
