One of the first major concertos written for the euphonium with each movement representing musical enjoyment for the head, heart, and toes, respectively.  A piece of the standard repertoire, this concerto contains writing that will challenge and engage both performer and listener.  The middle movement contains some of the most expressive lyrical writing in the repertoire.  In the third movement, good technical facility will be needed as well as multiple tonguing for its jovial lighthearted nature.  There are a number of dexterity challenges in this movement; thus, it is common to have younger players study the first two movements due to their significance even though they may not be ready to tackle the final movement.  Horovitz provides extensive detail as to articulation, tempo, and dynamics.  Orchestral parts are similar to a Mozart type orchestra and provide an easy ensemble to balance.  This is a highly recommended work.
