One of Handel’s most famous arias,

Ombra mai fùfrom Xerxes, is often just called “Largo from Xerxes.” It is a very simple, yet beautiful aria originally sung by a castrato, a male singer with the voice range of a female soprano. The subject of the song involves a topic that relates to many people. He is thanking a tree for the wonderful shade it provides on a very hot day. The concept remains so simple, yet many people will identify with the gracious relief that tree will provide and their thanks to be removed from the heat.
