Stutter Step is work for unaccompanied euphonium and was commissioned by Patrick Geren. The work was influenced by the music of Argentine composer, Astor Piazzolla, who revolutionized tango music in the 20th century.
Stutter Step opens with an introduction meant to be played freely and without time. It is a scene as if the two dancers are entering the room. An opportunity for the performer to demonstrate virtuosic musicality and interpretation. A meter and tempo are then given as the dance begins. Style and articulation are of the most importance in this section. Following is another freer section, however this time there is a greater sense of melody than in the introduction. The compound melody of this section works in tandem to outline harmony with a bassline accompanying the main melody. Familiar material then transitions the piece back to the dance tempo and to the coda as the work ends with a flourish.
