Benedetto Marcello (1686 -1739) was an Italian baroque composer born in Venice. The sonatas by Marcello are well known amongst brass players, and the F Major Sonata is commonly played. I discovered my inclination to the A Minor Sonata prior to my second year euphonium exam at the Grieg Academy, Bergen. The sonata holds a standard Adagio-Allegro-Largo-Allegro structure, where the two fast movements exhibit the brilliance and virtuoso style prevalent in baroque music, while the slow movements, particularly the 3rd movement, Largo, is introvert and lyrical. The final Allegro is written in 3/8, which is a common feature of finale movements from this period. This arrangement of the sonata was recorded on my CD Flight.
