Searching Inward, for solo euphonium, is written as a dialogue between two opposing voices in the mind. Whether it be light vs. dark, good vs. evil, or right vs. wrong, the work portrays the constant struggle of both sides trying to overcome each other.
This piece begins with an introduction of both sides, both mysterious and songlike, which produces the main themes for the remainder of the work. As doubt begins to creep in, both voices begin to push into each other’s thoughts and the results are a rollercoaster of emotions that range from fearful and contemplative to finally resulting in anger.
The end result of this emotional battle is a final moment of clarity where both sides are in agreement and end the struggle for the moment.
